I just have something quick to share with you this morning, but let me preface it by telling you that I DON'T vote in random online contests, like "Vote for my Cute Kid." But Pepsi has a contest going on that really got my attention, one that could mean big money for a worthy cause.<br />
<br />
The cause that I'm promoting and asking you to consider voting for is <a href="http://www.eagleswingsoftuscaloosa.org/">Eagles' Wings</a> , a non-profit that serves adults with disabilities. My brother-in-law has a cousin who is a client, so we're doing our best to support the cause.<br />
<br />
Eagle's Wings is currently #16 - the top two causes will be funded. <a href="http://www.refresheverything.com/eagleswingsinc501c3nonprofit">Click here</a> if you'd like to help - thanks so much!Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17068627580646557308noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729172594167572970.post-7930046768970515912010-09-13T04:35:00.000-07:002010-09-23T18:27:57.596-07:00Starting the transition to fallIt's that time of year . . . school's in full swing, my boy is playing football, and the trees in the back yard are sending leaves dancing toward the ground. I took a little time Friday afternoon to bring a little fall inside.<br />

Y'all have a blessed Monday!Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17068627580646557308noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729172594167572970.post-26746726923711327132010-09-10T04:19:00.000-07:002010-09-10T04:19:58.647-07:00Good morning Blog world - it's been a long time since I've seen you!<br />
<br />
It seems like since the summer started, all I've done is run - there has just been no energy left for blogging. My kids are are at a really fun age right now, and I've tried to make the most of that over the summer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK8bZbGJY6518NRRtm3EBM-f5TZcxXXwGR-0ogvZt_TwN5OTo50hYn5icHOS3xzm73o1S9wMrgUN1Ib2Y667jUJZYT90zFB3v-ZrQRdgd3h3zJY6fpPscMpJSk4Un8YNghurvoc397JQ/s1600/DSC08947.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK8bZbGJY6518NRRtm3EBM-f5TZcxXXwGR-0ogvZt_TwN5OTo50hYn5icHOS3xzm73o1S9wMrgUN1Ib2Y667jUJZYT90zFB3v-ZrQRdgd3h3zJY6fpPscMpJSk4Un8YNghurvoc397JQ/s400/DSC08947.JPG" width="300" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i>Playing with friends at the park</i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

There just hasn't been time for endlessly editing pictures! And to be perfectly honest, there's still not time. School is in full swing, my 7-year-old in playing football and is in Cub Scouts and my daughter goes to school 35 minutes away from home two days a week (though Nana & Grandmaw do help with that some). Our church is growing and I'm now teaching classes twice a week, and I'm trying to help keep the church's clothes closet organized. And I've gotten into couponing, which is both fun and beneficial, but very time-consuming.<br />
<br />
And then there's the things that I want to do - I want to start selling on ebay, to teach my four-year-old to read, to clean out the garage & de-junk my house, and I want to get back to blogging . . . anyone know how to get all that accomplished?<br />
<br />
<br />

</div>In order to make it easier to keep my blog updated, I think I'm going to start putting in more personal content. I don't have time for a project a day to blog about, so I'm just going with real life . . . and pictures that haven't been edited four different ways!<br />
<br />
Y'all have a good weekend! My husband and I both grew up camping and swimming there, and now our kids love it, too. Unfortunately, when vacation time rolled around, the river was out of its banks - flooded - and no good for fun.<br />
<br />
So we started considering other options for fun family time.<br />
<ul><li>Atlanta - Stone Mountain, Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, Zoo, Museum of Natural History, White Water . . . . tons of things to do!</li>
<li>Chattanooga - Aquarium, Zoo, Ruby Falls, Rock City, Incline Railway, Caverns . . . also lots to do.</li>
<li>Jellystone Campground - Water play for the kids, relaxation for the parents.</li>
</ul>Those were our leading contenders. They were all good options, but they all had the same big drawback - the forecast! Rain, rain, and more rain - all with a chance of storms. =( Close to home was just not going to be an option. We asked the kids what they wanted to do, and both wanted to go camping or go to the beach. So with the clock ticking down the hours to departure time, we decided on our destination . . . .<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwBDA6VDCh9stSlZTtlHOc8k_PlNs8uuSKmuRdl2k0KHDyati69T9Or77EtvFpIkQb6zbo2Ppy8j9UwD5u7D1-817SO5cwpkcX7aqN0kby47BdWQo395O-EmXaQiypBDgDd7C1Zpqfqg/s1600/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwBDA6VDCh9stSlZTtlHOc8k_PlNs8uuSKmuRdl2k0KHDyati69T9Or77EtvFpIkQb6zbo2Ppy8j9UwD5u7D1-817SO5cwpkcX7aqN0kby47BdWQo395O-EmXaQiypBDgDd7C1Zpqfqg/s400/1.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><br />
I honestly thought we were out of our minds, setting off on an overnight drive with the hope that we would find a campsite in the Outer Banks on Memorial Day weekend. Let me tell you, it was a LOOOONG drive, but my sweetie was up to the task. I mostly just talked to him (something I'm very good at!) to keep him awake.<br />
<br />
We arrived mid-morning Friday and began the campsite hunt with a stop at the NPS office (I think that's what it is?) to talk with a ranger. He advised me that the Oregon Inlet campground was most centrally located, so we headed that way . . . and found a CAMPGROUND FULL sign on the door. I went in anyway, and found that some campers had just checked out - they had the perfect place for us!<br />

The kids woke me up with a couple of surprise gifts (that I picked out Saturday night!), and Ben cooked pancakes for breakfast. After church with both of our moms, we headed out for a rare day of doing absolutely nothing . . . well, nothing but having laid-back fun together!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">We hit the backroads. . . </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPhP1kdeVOVZ66zUmBZOtmZHBeBuTBk9dlxuS8Bo-FLY12zO7JojVcJI_sy2uDTpcfR3ne39cMit3NbSbJcBGpub3rPCY9z50Es6_k9PzrYkSk9gOtGhxwzrt7A4Qy3qSPPGGMxwr6Dg/s1600/DSC08117.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPhP1kdeVOVZ66zUmBZOtmZHBeBuTBk9dlxuS8Bo-FLY12zO7JojVcJI_sy2uDTpcfR3ne39cMit3NbSbJcBGpub3rPCY9z50Es6_k9PzrYkSk9gOtGhxwzrt7A4Qy3qSPPGGMxwr6Dg/s400/DSC08117.JPG" width="300" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">. . . and enjoyed nature. </div><div style="text-align: center;">As we drove slowly with the windows down, the sweet smell of the honeysuckle and hedge drifted in. Heavenly!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;">We spent some time down by the river collecting fossils out of a bank, which we all loved. </div><div style="text-align: center;">It's amazing to unearth evidence that sharks used to swim where we live!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</span></i></b></div><div style="text-align: left;">Then I transferred my <b><i><span style="font-size: large;">initial</span></i></b> onto it. I rubbed chalk on the back of the letter and outlined it with a pen. I expected to use the chalk outline, but it turned out that the pen imprint was more prominent than the chalk (guess I should have picked a darker color!). I just used a <span style="font-size: large;"><i><b>Sharpie</b></i></span> to trace and fill in my letter.<br />
<br />
I kept the accessorizing to a minimum with a little <span style="font-size: large;"><i><b>twine</b></i></span> and a <span style="font-size: large;"><b><i>starfish</i></b></span>. For a pop of color, I used bright <span style="font-size: large;"><b><i>pink</i></b></span> ribbon to hang it, which I just stapled on the back. I also put some globs of hot glue on the back to serve as bumpers.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHrkE1fZMDz0hscbbnN0XS3yXaTh9ackyxOpYos2jXghYF8tZoDhWzr8N5WIJJ3GJFOeucM_ZVicHwnyi5nVQ0xq8OOOmPF_dpjaS8LasJh_ml3ADNPfac3AWsjwAOdiTjnJhisNLpyg/s1600/5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHrkE1fZMDz0hscbbnN0XS3yXaTh9ackyxOpYos2jXghYF8tZoDhWzr8N5WIJJ3GJFOeucM_ZVicHwnyi5nVQ0xq8OOOmPF_dpjaS8LasJh_ml3ADNPfac3AWsjwAOdiTjnJhisNLpyg/s320/5.JPG" /></a></div><br />
After I hung it, I decided that it would look better if the <span style="font-size: large;"><b><i>ribbon</i></b></span> was attached on both sides instead of just in the middle, so I did a little reworking. And here it is!<br />
<br />

Such great things to be found curbside! My hubby and I spent Friday night curb-shopping with my brother-in-law . . . it was their town's annual big trash pickup. We had soooo much fun scrounging for treasures, and we found four truck loads of goodies! <br />

(My hubby is being very <strike>annoying</strike> encouraging in this area - he's tired of me piling up his spot in the garage with "junk"!)<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">When we designed and built our house, we did so with the intention of hanging a big swing (think four grown butts big) on the back porch. So one day my father-in-law tells me, "I've got a swing for you . . . so-and-so gave it to me." And proceeded to show me the ugliest swing I've ever seen. <i>Ummmm, thanks . . . . but, um, I hadn't really planned on having harvest gold carpet on my swing . . . and, um, I kinda thought we might get something with the back completely attached. </i>So FIL put the swing in his barn.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Fast-forward six months. We're in the house now, and spring is coming quickly . . . I want a swing, but I don't want to go shopping for one, and I sure don't want to pay for a pretty, well-built swing that big. So I tucked my tail between my legs and asked my father-in-law if he still had Ugly. He did, so I went and wrested the monstrosity into the truck and brought it home. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">After removing the carpet, attaching the back, and giving her a good coat of paint, she looks downright presentable now.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: left;">My Momma, a couple of friends, and I had a much-needed Girls Day out on Saturday, and we had an absolute blast! It was such a blessing to have a day to ourselves to spend doing what we love - treasure hunting! We started out early at yard sales. Despite it raining on us off and on all morning, we hit lots of sales and found tons of goodies (okay, I did most of the buying, but it was good stuff!). Then we had Mexican for lunch and headed to the spa for massages. =) I really don't think our day could have been any better! </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

Now I've always had a thing for junk, but since then I've been looking at metal junk in a whole new way - looking for things that I could breathe new life into for the house. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">While plundering around in my father-in-laws barn last week, I happened upon a rusty metal box thingy that my hubby drug home years ago. It has lived in the in-law's barn since we moved back to our hometown - about five years ago. Home with me it came! I had no clue what I would do with it, but I did know that it had potential. I considered painting something on it and hanging it on the wall, and I thought about hanging it as a shelf, but I finally settled on using it as a table-top. Here's what I started with: </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivoURTgnZA_FI2N55NPOp7h-5Xp73L_v7dwlfNmS2-lzb2CY1RT_m5NFf0U5sNlRiI3l17VELIydTaoM7FSvg0l7ATmOwRmmNowG4K90nQ2mfWFGZSohhEeu2QJkFAsw8MFUwh9mUuig/s1600/Before.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivoURTgnZA_FI2N55NPOp7h-5Xp73L_v7dwlfNmS2-lzb2CY1RT_m5NFf0U5sNlRiI3l17VELIydTaoM7FSvg0l7ATmOwRmmNowG4K90nQ2mfWFGZSohhEeu2QJkFAsw8MFUwh9mUuig/s320/Before.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">When I told my hubby what I planned on doing, he thought I was plain goofy. I, however, thought it was a fabulous idea and was fully prepared to construct the table myself if I had to. Luckily, I didn't have to! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">My brother-in-law showed up about the time I was dragging in 4x4s from our barn. He seemed agreeable to helping, so I got out of the whole, measuring-drilling pilot holes-using electric screwdriver thing. I pretty much just told him what I wanted and handed him things as needed. Can't beat that, can you? (My hubby just shook his head at us & went to cook supper, since I was so excited about starting my project that I neglected to feed anyone.)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">After just a little while, we had a table! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1R9HbIvcWFlfts6Y-89Qii4Zjsn-VbANyjHoExQTvrYeYZ4nhLksK3Bg1a5h03qStHyX1OeIglrnW82fqzjNgeV6HqhFNuaUqeGrTa5gwrWs5d1UQpwVNQhaIkZdu-e7WbYDXJMU-Bw/s320/table+before+paint.JPG" /> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Then it was time to paint it. First, I took the top off and cleaned it well, then sprayed on some clear sealer.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Since all the wood was recycled, I ran the mouse sander over it quickly to knock down any rough spots. I also rubbed some wax over the red paint so that it would show through when I distressed it. Then it was time for the paint. I had some good help!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_6Sc2RWxS6aNkqNur85cv6U-iW3SQuOVbGq5YVuySON_tR8gDoaZo3WIIQ5Fl6KbMIKhFJnuC0cGHvX3CXckf-nwuZg2jdLFr8xE54mJLrWVSTc5BGq60rvCtcAhnYz53yBZ9lcb2KA/s320/helpers.JPG" /> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It took two coats of paint to cover it well, and then I rubbed on some stain to darken it up and highlight the dents and dings. It really turned out brighter than I had intended, so I applied the stain twice, leaving it on longer the second time before I wiped over it. I sanded the edges a good bit, and also sanded it to expose some red paint. I then rubbed stain over the newly distressed areas to darken them up. After it dried for a couple of hours, I screwed the top back on and called it finished. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiILjFozmNdWSYJSruJaWKD46Nu-XMpxxoWxa5mvdSXo8FCN81plQSpIyfeMRNqJCz6aYerEY-OWnLWX8ZwMqVE2WKzthB71P5yPEp-00PhgfUCeGMTb0cftTPduZnj4oJ2lS8JmR9IMA/s1600/Finished+table.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br />

It's all the goodies I grabbed up at Hobby Lobby.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNquOSVx-M-F4d43rWWMV8KUAF29TyEfM7wCkZCX9t51GlnXLSQrai4zOWHN9iTiJaDfq-tnJLpJIv0KW1pU4cxgMOSjO97aI-Ua80NxLA6HgipCUazbJNpP_os-OC_3KtzH4Iy6oUSw/s1600-h/HobLob.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNquOSVx-M-F4d43rWWMV8KUAF29TyEfM7wCkZCX9t51GlnXLSQrai4zOWHN9iTiJaDfq-tnJLpJIv0KW1pU4cxgMOSjO97aI-Ua80NxLA6HgipCUazbJNpP_os-OC_3KtzH4Iy6oUSw/s320/HobLob.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Those poor gray pears were just so drab, but a little craft paint turned that drab to fab!<br />
<br />
First I brushed on green paint and quickly wiped it off with a paper towel so that a little of the wood would show through. I followed that up with some yellow, also wiped off and blended. A little brown on the stems and I was finished!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjb4JGzYGNCqgUChm04a3t0EP4MiU3J232UcjqkntH23wBrHBkmOGYtLY1kUtx9zUv7o-o9761WKvGTp4ZvLdC08x8Q92NaD2TSZwHVjN6Ha7doEMFw6t7xJYQpRbbmQOGPJOizCzfJLg/s1600-h/pear1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjb4JGzYGNCqgUChm04a3t0EP4MiU3J232UcjqkntH23wBrHBkmOGYtLY1kUtx9zUv7o-o9761WKvGTp4ZvLdC08x8Q92NaD2TSZwHVjN6Ha7doEMFw6t7xJYQpRbbmQOGPJOizCzfJLg/s320/pear1.JPG" /></a></div><br />
. . . or so I thought. After I looked at my new cuties a while, I decided that I couldn't live with them like they were. So out came my trusty whatever-I-found-in-the-garage stain. I slopped on some stain, let it soak in for just a minute, and then wiped them down good with a clean paper towel. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEig5Cm2lKp1zi-5oTdffq2wY7B5_XD3FluKnvPaEtbEicZx2Et4n_WW7Sac6XSjEbbc9uowpGHnfCa1uTey1mqHmYyULMlQO9Zf2cb8fMEaguVP2iq-6ZoI1jlqq6KwnIfUDsoRGOlUAw/s1600-h/pears.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEig5Cm2lKp1zi-5oTdffq2wY7B5_XD3FluKnvPaEtbEicZx2Et4n_WW7Sac6XSjEbbc9uowpGHnfCa1uTey1mqHmYyULMlQO9Zf2cb8fMEaguVP2iq-6ZoI1jlqq6KwnIfUDsoRGOlUAw/s320/pears.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Much better! The stain toned down the color a lot and gave them more character. I'm very happy with how they turned out!<br />

<div style="text-align: center;"><i>Oh, how I love thee, Blue Ocean Breeze!</i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">I am sooo loving this paint! I picked it up at Wally World one day, not quite sure that it was going to work. I was looking for something to paint a stool with, and I wanted it to kinda match this McCoy bowl that I have in the bathroom holding shells from our 10th anniversary cruise to Mexico.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

</div>After a quick rubdown with some stain to shabby her up, I was absolutely smitten!<br />
<br />
Today I found a new project for my Blue Ocean Breeze - the tallest dodad in this picture.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBGFCj1YbejBv7w92PYx7Zx_9lgexnp-qR6i9w_s8yHX-43fTy0A0Yhy1QWNowU6UGtSAfAs2U34bN63mhsgNZzFZVlxtGQ6T9irlC0Zxlj_y23pZPxq_EFSA2c4z2taOma2wOO-Nj_Q/s1600-h/HobLob.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBGFCj1YbejBv7w92PYx7Zx_9lgexnp-qR6i9w_s8yHX-43fTy0A0Yhy1QWNowU6UGtSAfAs2U34bN63mhsgNZzFZVlxtGQ6T9irlC0Zxlj_y23pZPxq_EFSA2c4z2taOma2wOO-Nj_Q/s320/HobLob.JPG" /></a></div><br />
I was right before painting this baby white when I thought about my Blue Ocean Breeze...<br />
<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">If you haven't tried this paint,<i> get you some!!!</i> It's soooo beautiful, and it's spray nozzle is cool, too. <i>(No, this is not a paid endorsement...although I'm not against the idea!) </i></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">As a side note, this whole blogging thing will turn you into a picture-taking maniac. I've always been a wee bit crazy, but this just takes the cake. So here's one more!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

You can join in the fun at <a href="http://linda-coastalcharm.blogspot.com/2010/03/nifty-thrifty-tuesdays.html">Coastal Charm.</a><br />
<br />
My favorite thrifty finds today came from Hobby Lobby. Here's what I found...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhir0f8AwfNnd7ci25pFqu4-M30ELiBOf7VvlG_BPBXp7npmjAM7LC21osH2Fp4wQ3Rs_ScD4g44YZfJuMFIGX8xBG8u2F-yHMufghassxsTRrSfhr9vX-J8fg4JPuNNkie4m4hRoKekg/s1600-h/HobLob.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">,<img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhir0f8AwfNnd7ci25pFqu4-M30ELiBOf7VvlG_BPBXp7npmjAM7LC21osH2Fp4wQ3Rs_ScD4g44YZfJuMFIGX8xBG8u2F-yHMufghassxsTRrSfhr9vX-J8fg4JPuNNkie4m4hRoKekg/s320/HobLob.JPG" /></a> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The pears were only $1.20 each! I see paint in their future - something like the green one here...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuU0A9p5DzTfGV1vT_7CiJkXEhNJUEZL4eAlKzFJ99munCUR_Cyzau0KNwRMuRG4xcOFmr_2M7HJWcyRpt6nx4oztbrKKhhtWZrBevNMP7ovo64fLn9QMKb7GVOdGmoRb9mD4vXUCNPw/s1600-h/AA646_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuU0A9p5DzTfGV1vT_7CiJkXEhNJUEZL4eAlKzFJ99munCUR_Cyzau0KNwRMuRG4xcOFmr_2M7HJWcyRpt6nx4oztbrKKhhtWZrBevNMP7ovo64fLn9QMKb7GVOdGmoRb9mD4vXUCNPw/s320/AA646_1.jpg" /></a></div></div><br />
The tall thingys were $4 and $8. These look like the perfect candidates for a gorgeous chippy paint technique that I saw blogged about, if I could only find it again! I'll probably take the easy way out & paint them then add some glazing. Either way, they have a lot of potential. My total came to $17....original price for all this would have been $78!! Yay for 80% off! And double yay for Hobby Lobby gift cards!!!<br />
<br />
I made out pretty well at the thrift store, too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyfybP-Euqr4HQsQiHgl02Q1z1ZerJggtis_flrnXYcxjm1l0bS8mSk15Huhde7eWPb1jjXAEMuOiBCyHZJO4n8N3uAeI2dJzRu_sWb9PxtWVlpRYNH68xTEziL_sgEczhvv_MrZJkMA/s1600-h/Thrift.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyfybP-Euqr4HQsQiHgl02Q1z1ZerJggtis_flrnXYcxjm1l0bS8mSk15Huhde7eWPb1jjXAEMuOiBCyHZJO4n8N3uAeI2dJzRu_sWb9PxtWVlpRYNH68xTEziL_sgEczhvv_MrZJkMA/s320/Thrift.JPG" /></a> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The candlesticks, at $1.50 each, will be spray painted and added to my decorating stash. Like-new Levis for my hubby, a new pair of Liberty's for my little country boy ( he's six, and recently decided he liked his overalls when his little sister told him, "You look like a MAN in those!"). I also got a new Waverly dust ruffle for our bed. All that was $6.88 each - a bit steep for me 'cause I prefer yard sale prices. Very good prices compared to retail, though. The Nautica khakis were $1.50 or so. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I enjoyed sharing my finds. I can't wait for yard sale season to start - hopefully that'll be this weekend! Then we should have some really thrifty finds!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Thanks, Linda, for letting us party at your place!</div>Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17068627580646557308noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729172594167572970.post-66354549082789736262010-02-10T20:04:00.000-08:002010-02-14T20:12:14.556-08:00DIY Hanging MonogramOver the last few days, I've been working on a little project to fill the empty space above our bed. Today I finished it up.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHo2tmWueRjiYD3nksjKkBe5spgGYlgftfHXFWLFDeoMFFCFbGzezfYoWiSHmSo2FFZ7_Jg7Dw9PwQlxjNZh43N_dXfZDF5lu9WSWHmaVNTdriF839-fvPMcervL4jZJLKeAtv_YtrxA/s1600-h/hanging.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHo2tmWueRjiYD3nksjKkBe5spgGYlgftfHXFWLFDeoMFFCFbGzezfYoWiSHmSo2FFZ7_Jg7Dw9PwQlxjNZh43N_dXfZDF5lu9WSWHmaVNTdriF839-fvPMcervL4jZJLKeAtv_YtrxA/s320/hanging.JPG" /></a> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I had everything I needed to put this together, so it didn't cost a thing! I started with an old painting that I bought years ago with the intention of transforming it into a Ballard-type bulletin board. So much for that....</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXYzvxW9oEMneNq4k5Bop-etx87hdFhMsvrmSdK0YK9jT5KTAWnwYHMEG-W0mAdMSXthvMI8EaddjGEyIJSAJu0N-KwTB6a8y4iOJSuLN-O3FO8NyJ7Pnq4EkIxJZ8ICIa9bitKPMLVQ/s1600-h/Frame+before.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXYzvxW9oEMneNq4k5Bop-etx87hdFhMsvrmSdK0YK9jT5KTAWnwYHMEG-W0mAdMSXthvMI8EaddjGEyIJSAJu0N-KwTB6a8y4iOJSuLN-O3FO8NyJ7Pnq4EkIxJZ8ICIa9bitKPMLVQ/s320/Frame+before.JPG" /></a> </div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: left;">After popping the canvas out, I brushed a little black craft paint over the frame to tone down the gaudy gold a bit. Then I stretched a grubby old sheet over the canvas to cover the painting. I just stapled it to the frame in the back, pulling it tightly as I went. Then I did the same with a piece of white burlap - pulled it over the frame & stapled. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">After I decided what font to use & got my sizing right, I printed off the letters and did a little measuring to center them up on the canvas.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWz-V6th-AeatIjIHH_ZXrms4SQ7NRwpIOFZyB36WHGGsRBcHDyAqaopZfjAXFlXMT9A2v0B5BxepbZJzogY_wkW5SwjcwtV891zc-qSEFAOl66J0mxoiGuP3ZCOoqmDRhe9hHk4hEmw/s1600-h/Laid+out.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWz-V6th-AeatIjIHH_ZXrms4SQ7NRwpIOFZyB36WHGGsRBcHDyAqaopZfjAXFlXMT9A2v0B5BxepbZJzogY_wkW5SwjcwtV891zc-qSEFAOl66J0mxoiGuP3ZCOoqmDRhe9hHk4hEmw/s320/Laid+out.JPG" /></a> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It was at this point that I figured out that my plan to print out my monogram on an iron-on wasn't going to work. Why? Because my printer's acting like a piece of junk. So I just rolled with it - I cut the letters out & traced around them with a marker.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrrWht2QKzHOYaS7MxhtsAB_gfO-lG_oGpAUEUQt-3L3S3Cv_uvLtyzjl_hvps8CDNytN17xCxQMgUf1YjAtqLdzg3CGQ-o0qBKcB6PgTN-L1VwjCjYZEwyie7C6m363s-Ee8lWky24w/s1600-h/cut+out.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrrWht2QKzHOYaS7MxhtsAB_gfO-lG_oGpAUEUQt-3L3S3Cv_uvLtyzjl_hvps8CDNytN17xCxQMgUf1YjAtqLdzg3CGQ-o0qBKcB6PgTN-L1VwjCjYZEwyie7C6m363s-Ee8lWky24w/s320/cut+out.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM_o8q2ubiD7qU8h-662mLEE9XS8B4HMcCRALxyJgepq1kCCq7d0rpj03yBvo8DNqs8yfS0N4vhOMiVxi2bQ_W7zRAcHhjgUhBCgl5aOo9-LeAXNGyry8RsXvYdzxhHig9LeLn6dGc5w/s1600-h/outline.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM_o8q2ubiD7qU8h-662mLEE9XS8B4HMcCRALxyJgepq1kCCq7d0rpj03yBvo8DNqs8yfS0N4vhOMiVxi2bQ_W7zRAcHhjgUhBCgl5aOo9-LeAXNGyry8RsXvYdzxhHig9LeLn6dGc5w/s320/outline.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div>Then I got to work filling in with my craft paint. It took a few coats to cover it well. I'm loving the result!<br />
<br />

I initially made this to hide some ugly (an exposed screw after I hung a chalkboard), but it didn't work for that so it's just hanging around being cute.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjlElqAd-9GqOzbPMS4y4N358y_gm5ZJ3o-CMFYjjpFsudbNapxl1-gufSc1ryVuh3O3i7DB9dVdO8KEIk3vIzEG-MmRkGNQDe6yK_SOI2zX6RbHIAtGbRFfhjQVHFo6rr6A9fNkBYbw/s1600-h/tassel.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjlElqAd-9GqOzbPMS4y4N358y_gm5ZJ3o-CMFYjjpFsudbNapxl1-gufSc1ryVuh3O3i7DB9dVdO8KEIk3vIzEG-MmRkGNQDe6yK_SOI2zX6RbHIAtGbRFfhjQVHFo6rr6A9fNkBYbw/s400/tassel.JPG" width="300" /></a></div><br />
I started with half of a wooden thread spool that I found. After painting it black and threading some twine through it for a hanger, I just started layering on whatever I could find. I wrapped it with burlap first, then cut that into strips and pulled out the bottom strings to make it fringe-y. Then I added some fabric from an old curtain and ribbon left over from making hair-bows. I didn't have a clue how to finish it off, so I just coiled twine around the top, hot-gluing as I went.<br />
<br />
I've been admiring cute tassels in blogland for a while now, but I never really thought I could do it. I didn't follow all the rules on this, but it was an easy one to get started on. I think I'll be trying another one soon - it was fun!<br />
<br />

</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: small;">This weekend we had the pleasure of hosting a party for all the fabulous people who helped us build our house. In a time when everyone is rushing around from here to there, I am absolutely amazed that these people gave</span> so much of their time - some from daylight to dark every Saturday and on Sunday afternoons, too - to help us. I will be forever grateful to them! This weekend we showed our love & appreciation by doing what we Southerners do best - we fed them!<br />

My. Goodness. Who would have ever thought that decorating my little sweetie's room could come with so much drama?!<br />
<br />
Let me start by saying that this is the first house that I've lived in that had sheetrock - and oh, how I have longed for sheetrock over the years! But my dreams didn't look like this!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLNbgcednWmsl7lHy631tG0xxX2lAbgoHWTZiMe4tVvpPMqIvZ4VSvjxPTMfk6KtwM3JzKSS9o0bAKmlq7hE3Jg_zLh_c_SsGEi4E4bv7jp9VRp73FpLR9khP1ES_JwIuErM6MGWU-7Q/s1600-h/Blooper+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="101" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLNbgcednWmsl7lHy631tG0xxX2lAbgoHWTZiMe4tVvpPMqIvZ4VSvjxPTMfk6KtwM3JzKSS9o0bAKmlq7hE3Jg_zLh_c_SsGEi4E4bv7jp9VRp73FpLR9khP1ES_JwIuErM6MGWU-7Q/s400/Blooper+copy.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
</div><br />
Nor did I have dreamy visions of this...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe56vDmF75RnQXGXZHfL1LAhYFJNqTvZagp4lE4sa5uayZRs8E06oypCLgHU2-vRY35gB361sZaOAL2FvlKzAExNCNxyRCcOuV2Fc82ty4rZHlcmeMJms0wescNzEWlc8HHHvcOvCUkw/s1600-h/Blooper2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe56vDmF75RnQXGXZHfL1LAhYFJNqTvZagp4lE4sa5uayZRs8E06oypCLgHU2-vRY35gB361sZaOAL2FvlKzAExNCNxyRCcOuV2Fc82ty4rZHlcmeMJms0wescNzEWlc8HHHvcOvCUkw/s320/Blooper2.JPG" /></a><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">...on my freshly painted bookshelf!! I knew there were studs in that wall, but WHERE??? The top picture is my attempt at finding a stud. The bottom shows what happened when my hubby stepped in with a hammer. It was bad. I mean really bad. He nailed that bad boy to the wall, stepped back and said (in a voice that clearly conveyed the fact that he was soooo tired of me & my bookshelf spectacle), "Now do you think it's going to stay up there?" So I gave it a little tug . . . . . . .and the doggone back came off the shelf!!!!! You nailed it up there real well, sweetie - but now my shelf's falling apart! At this point hubby was completely disgusted - he left me with it.<br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And then I cried, because this project was not supposed to be so stressful. Then I put my big girl panties on and figured out a way to make it work. . . . after I staple-gunned the back onto the shelf. =)<br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Wanna know how I finally found a stud? I found an outlet, which is obviously attached to a stud. But on which side? Ummmm, there's a nail pop! Nails pop out of . . . . Studs! So I measured from the corner to the nail pop to figure out where the stud is at. I attached an L-bracket to the top of the shelf, then to the wall. And it was DONE.<br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRYkWfaqWQf9VbmtmN2FPi3ZkpP-VNiP1RhAHPzomYwoBdcVSn4AgDqMFyzsTNpZiZ6v4_d26AVOtZ5Ud9WX9HjeMexJnTy8iu_VqGHCW4jeuNJm0IThyGiLi_JM7GADRMEodwUmBL2A/s1600-h/Jar.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRYkWfaqWQf9VbmtmN2FPi3ZkpP-VNiP1RhAHPzomYwoBdcVSn4AgDqMFyzsTNpZiZ6v4_d26AVOtZ5Ud9WX9HjeMexJnTy8iu_VqGHCW4jeuNJm0IThyGiLi_JM7GADRMEodwUmBL2A/s320/Jar.jpg" /></a><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">A strategically placed jar of sand covers the bracket right up. I haven't touched up the paint on the shelf yet, but maybe I'll get around to it someday. And if I don't, who cares?<i><b> It doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful!!!! </b></i>(Thanks, <a href="http://www.thenester.com/">Nester</a> , for those words of wisdom!) <br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">But that's not the end of the story - no, there's more! See that cute picture hanging to the right of the jar? As I was stepping into a chair to nail it up, the leg broke off of the chair!!!! I screamed, I hollered, I rolled on the floor moaning in pain - I was thoroughly dramatic, but it HURT!!!! And I had a big purple bruise the next day to show for my efforts. Just keeping it real, folks!<br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Hope you enjoyed my bloopers! I think it's nice to see that decorating (and baby raising - heck, life in general) isn't just the pretty blog-worthy stuff. The trials, though, give me a greater appreciation for all the goodness that God brings to my life! Thanks for stopping by!<br />

My son, who is six, doesn't really want Momma monkeying around in his room - he wants to decorate it with things like Transformers and rocks. So I'm soooo enjoying having free reign in my four-year-old daughter's room. We recently built our house, so I started with a clean slate - and no money for decorating! We've been living here for about four months now, and I've been collecting pieces here and there along the way. I've finally put everything together, and I'm loving what I've accomplished in there!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

Her bed was a freebie which was transformed with a little sanding and some paint. Here's a before shot of the bed. Wasn't she a beauty?!<br />

After living here for a little while, it became apparent that she absolutely had to have a bookcase. A few coats of paint - the green is left over from my laundry room - made an old one new again.<br />

I picked up the lamp for a few bucks at my favorite thrift store, but something had to be done about the shade - it just looked cruddy! I planned on covering it with white burlap, but painting is so much more fun! So I broke out my <strike>kids' paint brush</strike> painting supplies and went to town painting that baby with my 33 cent craft paint. <i>And it took the entire bottle!!</i> Craft paint usually goes a long way, but apparently not when you're painting thick fabric. So for about $4, I have a cute lamp to add to the mix.<br />
<br />
I found a fabulous plate at a yard sale to hang between her closets, and the cute painting above her bed came from a local thrift store for just pennies.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It has only been a few months since we moved into our new home, and I am really enjoying having a mantle to decorate. With Christmas gone, I wanted to update our mantle a little. Using some things the kids and I picked up while walking in the woods, I put this together.<br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">I love it because it combines materials from our woods - reindeer moss, twigs, and pinecones - with some cute beachy elements. I <strike>stole</strike> borrowed the antler from my sweet hubby's set that he rattles when he hunts, and the kids picked up the guinea feathers at my parents' house.<br />
